Palmeiras Leads Al Ahly 2-0 in FIFA Club World Cup Match Halted Due to Weather

East Rutherford, United States – The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Group Stage match between Brazilian giants Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly FC, being played at MetLife Stadium, was suspended on Thursday, June 19, 2025, with Palmeiras holding a 2-0 lead. The game was halted in the second half due to “adverse weather conditions,” despite initial reports indicating clear skies.

Match Progress Before Suspension

The highly anticipated Group A clash, which kicked off at 9:30 PM IST, saw both teams vying for a crucial victory after drawing their opening matches in the tournament.

The first half remained goalless, with both sides looking to gain an advantage. A significant moment occurred in the 37th minute when Palmeiras’ Raphael Veiga was initially shown a red card for a reckless challenge. However, after a VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow card, much to the relief of Palmeiras and their fans.

The second half began with immediate action from Palmeiras. In the 49th minute, Palmeiras took the lead in unfortunate fashion for Al Ahly, as Wessam Abou Ali scored an own goal, mistiming a header while attempting to clear a dangerous cross and sending it into his own net.

Palmeiras extended their lead in the 59th minute with a clinical finish from Flaco Lopez. He received a sharp pass that sliced through the Al Ahly defense, allowing him to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper and fire the ball into the bottom right corner, making the score 2-0.

Shortly after Lopez’s goal, the match was unexpectedly suspended due to “weather problems.” The duration of the suspension and when the match will resume or be completed is yet to be announced.

What’s at Stake

This match is a pivotal encounter in Group A of the FIFA Club World Cup, which also includes Inter Miami and FC Porto. Both Palmeiras and Al Ahly had drawn their first group stage games (Palmeiras 0-0 Porto, Al Ahly 0-0 Inter Miami). A victory in this match is crucial for either team’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage, as only the top two teams from each group will progress.

Fans will now await further announcements from FIFA regarding the resumption of this vital fixture.
