PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat: A Deep Dive into Yoga, Health, and Democratic Values

NEW DELHI – June 29, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the nation in the 123rd episode of his monthly radio program, “Mann Ki Baat,” touching upon a diverse range of topics from global Yoga celebrations and India’s success in eradicating Trachoma, to a stark reminder of the 1975 Emergency. The broadcast offered insights into national achievements, cultural significance, and a call for democratic vigilance.

Yoga’s Global Embrace and India’s Health Milestone

The Prime Minister began by reflecting on the widespread success of International Yoga Day, celebrated on June 21st. He noted the enthusiastic participation of millions across the world, highlighting how the tradition has grown grander each year since its inception a decade ago, signaling a growing adoption of yoga in daily life. Modi specifically mentioned the mesmerizing visuals from Visakhapatnam, where he led a gathering of three lakh people, and the remarkable feat of over 2,000 tribal students performing 108 Surya Namaskars for 108 minutes.

In a significant health announcement, PM Modi proudly declared that the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially certified India as Trachoma-free. He attributed this monumental achievement to the relentless dedication of health workers, coupled with the impactful Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Jal Jeevan Mission initiatives.

Recalling the Emergency: A Call for Democratic Vigilance

A poignant part of the address was Prime Minister Modi’s strong condemnation of the 1975 Emergency, describing it as a “darkest chapter” in India’s democratic history. Without directly naming the then-ruling party, he asserted that those who imposed the Emergency “not only murdered the spirit of the constitution but also tried to suppress the judiciary as puppets.” He recalled the arbitrary arrests under the MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act) and the widespread torture endured by citizens.

Modi paid tribute to the courage of Indians who resisted authoritarian rule, emphasizing that people refused to compromise on democracy, ultimately leading to the lifting of the Emergency and the defeat of its perpetrators. His remarks come as the 50th anniversary of the Emergency was recently commemorated as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day), and serve as a powerful reminder for citizens to remain vigilant in safeguarding constitutional principles and democratic values.

Pilgrimages and Social Protection

The Prime Minister also extended his best wishes to devotees embarking on various religious pilgrimages, including the sacred Amarnath Yatra set to begin on July 3rd, and reflected on the recently concluded Jagannath Rath Yatra. He highlighted the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” (One India, Great India) reflected in these journeys and commended those who contribute selflessly to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of these spiritual events, such as organizing community kitchens and medical camps.

Furthermore, PM Modi shared encouraging data from a recent International Labour Organization (ILO) report, stating that over 64% of India’s population now receives some form of social protection benefit. He noted a significant increase in beneficiaries under government welfare schemes, rising from less than 25 crore in 2015 to over 95 crore today, underscoring the government’s commitment to social security.

The 123rd episode of “Mann Ki Baat” underscored the Prime Minister’s focus on national well-being, historical lessons, and collective societal efforts.
