HDFC Bank’s CHRO Vinay Razdan Resigns After Seven-Year Tenure
Mumbai, India – HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector lender, has announced the resignation of its Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Mr. Vinay Razdan. His resignation became effective at the close of business hours on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. The bank confirmed the development through a regulatory filing, stating that his resignation has been accepted.
Mr. Razdan, an HR veteran with over three decades of experience, had served as HDFC Bank’s CHRO for nearly seven years, having joined the institution in September 2018. His departure comes at a significant juncture for the bank, approximately a year after its monumental merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (HDFC Ltd.), a period during which he played a crucial role in managing human capital strategy and integration.
Reasons Undisclosed by the Bank
While the resignation has been formally accepted, HDFC Bank has not disclosed any specific reason for Mr. Razdan’s departure in its official communications. This lack of explicit detail comes despite Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) norms that typically advocate for transparency in such key management personnel changes.
However, industry speculation and reports suggest that his exit could be linked to broader trends of attrition observed in the private banking sector, as well as ongoing discussions around succession planning within the bank’s top leadership.
According to his resignation letter, dated June 2, 2025, Mr. Razdan indicated he would serve a three-month notice period, with an intention to proceed on “gardening leave” – a practice where an employee is relieved from active duties during their notice period – unless otherwise instructed by the bank.
A Distinguished Career in Human Resources
Before his tenure at HDFC Bank, Mr. Razdan held the CHRO position at Idea Cellular Ltd. for over 12 years, where he was instrumental in significant organizational transformations, including playing a pivotal role in the merger with Vodafone India to form Vi. His extensive career also includes leadership stints at prominent organizations such as ITC Ltd. and HCL Technologies, spanning across diverse sectors like FMCG, IT Services, and Telecommunications. Mr. Razdan is an alumnus of Delhi University and holds a postgraduate qualification in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from XLRI, Jamshedpur.
Successor Yet to Be Named
As of now, HDFC Bank has not announced Mr. Razdan’s successor. The bank is expected to deliberate on the appointment, with internal candidates likely to be considered alongside potential external contenders for the critical CHRO role.
Mr. Razdan’s resignation marks a notable change in the leadership landscape of one of India’s most prominent financial institutions, particularly as the banking sector continues to navigate talent management challenges and evolving market dynamics.
