Ahmedabad, June 13, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad Friday to personally oversee relief efforts following the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which tragically went down shortly after takeoff on June 12.

On the Ground at the Crash Site

Standing amidst debris in Meghani Nagar—where the plane struck a hostel building adjacent to BJ Medical College—Modi led a high-level site inspection alongside Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, and senior officials.

He observed ongoing rescue and DNA identification operations, describing the scene as “saddening” and promising that the government would ensure dignified support for all victims.

In Hospital With Survivor & Injured

At Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, PM Modi met Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the crash, offering encouragement and assurance of government care. He also spoke with other injured passengers and medical staff, praising their bravery and stressing that “the nation is with you in this tough time.”

Condolences to Bereaved Families

The Prime Minister consoled the families of the deceased, including former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani. Modi described Rupani as a “gentle, hardworking man” and met with his wife Anjali and daughter Radhika in a private gathering.

DNA procedures are underway at the hospital’s mortuary, with relatives arriving from across India and abroad to confirm identities.

High-Level Response

Modi presided over a critical review meeting in Ahmedabad with top officials to monitor relief, hospital care, and investigation progress. A multi-disciplinary committee led by the Union Home Secretary has been formed to probe the crash and provide policy recommendations.

Investigation in Full Swing

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), supported by DGCA and international experts from the U.S. NTSB and U.K. AAIB, has begun a detailed analysis. Both black boxes are in secure custody, with preliminary data expected soon.

Modi emphasized the importance of drawing lessons to strengthen safety protocols and prevent similar disasters.

Summary

Prime Minister Modi’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to transparency, compassion, and accountability. By meeting the survivor, supporting the injured, and offering condolences to grieving families, he conveyed that no stone would be left unturned. A high-level panel and international cooperation in the probe signal that India is mobilizing swift and serious measures to understand and learn from this tragedy.
